And in the spring of 2022, MIT reinstated its SAT/ACT requirement for admission after suspending it during the pandemic (as most other colleges and universities did). In 2020, the University of California Faculty Senate recommended that the system continue to use SAT and ACT scores in the admissions process. Their parents are also likely to be more educated and work flexible jobs, and higher-income students are more likely to attend high schools with grade inflation (although this is a minor influencing factor). Students from higher income families have more stable families, additional time for studying, money for extracurriculars and tutoring, and the GPA to prove it. Scrapping tests altogether in college admissions could result in colleges overemphasizing factors that privilege being rich just as much. While unthoughtful use of standardized test scores certainly reproduces inequality, abandoning them altogether risks making matters even worse. As the Brookings Institution report “SAT math scores mirror and maintain racial inequity” says: But totally abandoning college entrance exams might make things worse. If SAT and ACT scores did nothing to predict the success of a student in college, then the obvious thing to do would be to abandon them altogether for college admissions. The bottom line is that there are many more white and Asian students with high SAT scores – the sorts of scores necessary to gain admission to UF and FSU and earn Bright Futures scholarships – than there are Black and Hispanic students with such scores. The white paper was summarized in an article written by Kantrowitz for Forbes. Those plots and tables are included here. The magnitude of the problem of disparities in SAT scores between advantaged and disadvantaged communities at the national level can be seen in two plots and two tables from a white paper published by Mark Kantrowitz in 2021. And unlike most other states, Florida still requires SAT or ACT scores for admission to its public universities. But that option is not available to all students. There is an escape hatch from the Bright Futures test score requirement, which is to earn an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma or a Cambridge AICE diploma in high school. The corresponding ACT cutoff scores are 25 and 29, respectively. There are specific cutoff scores for the two levels of Bright Futures scholarships – a 1210 SAT score for the Florida Medallions Scholar level (which pays 75% of tuition) and 1340 for the Florida Academic Scholars level (which pays 100% of tuition). Leslie and Annie argue that test scores exacerbate this frustrating inequity. In fact, since the Florida Lottery funds the Bright Futures scholarship program this program amounts to what they called a “reverse Robin Hood” situation: Low-income communities spend more money on lottery tickets than affluent communities, making Bright Futures a transfer of wealth from low-income communities to higher-income communities. Two articles published in the Orlando Sentinel this month by reporters Leslie Postal and Annie Martin demonstrate that students from low-income communities win Bright Futures scholarships and admission to universities like the University of Florida and the University of Central Florida at rates much lower than students in affluent communities. Payne’s film is set at a New England boarding school over the holiday break in the 1970s.Do students from disadvantaged backgrounds in Florida have a fair shot at earning Bright Futures scholarships and being admitted as new high school graduates to the state’s public universities? The NBR is proud to award this complex, important, and deeply resonant epic as our best film and Scorsese as our best director,” Annie Schulhof, president of the board, said in a statement.Īlexander Payne’s “The Holdovers” was also roundly honored by the group, which named Paul Giamatti best actor, Da’Vine Joy Randolph best supporting actress and David Hemingson’s script best screenplay. “Killers of the Flower Moon is a stunning masterpiece from one of our greatest filmmakers, Martin Scorsese. That follows recent honors for the film and for Gladstone from the New York Film Critics Circle and the Gotham Awards. The National Board of Review, a long-running organization comprised of film enthusiasts and academics, also on Wednesday named Scorsese best director and Lily Gladstone best actress. NEW YORK (AP) - “Killers of the Flower Moon” was named the best film of the year by the National Board of Review, adding to the early awards-season haul of Martin Scorsese’s Osage epic.
